It's time to vote!

Hi,

Yesterday, IEEE sent out an electronic notice to all members who have agreed to receive e-mail relative to balloting. In the message, we are told of the candidates, sources of information, and our opportunity to vote. Additionally, the paper version of the electronic ballot is "in the mail".

Please make it your responsibility to vote. Read about the candidates, their experience, their backgrounds and their plans and make an informed choice as to who should be the next IEEE leaders.

For Region 3 Delegate-Director-Elect, I hope you will find my credentials, activities and vision worthy of your vote. Details are available as other posts on this web site. Ready, Set, Go...

Welcome to my blog. I have agreed to run (and if elected serve) as the the 2010-11 Region 3 Delegate/Director Elect to then become the Region 3 Delegate/Director 2012-13. This represents a minimum commitment to Region 3 of six years (2 years as "Past Director" with specific roles within the Institute).

I have along with others watched active membership in IEEE Sections around the Region (and probably the world) wane over the years. One can survey other organizations and see much the same trends. In fact, Robert Putnam documents this trend in his book Bowling Alone. I have become convinced that old-style local "membership" is going down this path and if other groups are all having the same problems, the traditional membership activities are not going to impact the phenomena.

I was fortunate to have been invited by then RAB Vice President Pedro Ray to work with others to recast the member model and IEEE's member approach. This work resulted in the changing of IEEE's organization from having a Regional Activities Board to having a Member and Geographic Activities Board with a strong focus on the member -- not just as a customer of IEEE products and services but as an engaged participant in the profession with obligations as well as benefits. This transformation is almost complete on paper but it is not yet a part of IEEE culture or implemented broadly in the immense part of IEEE that is not part of the organization's central governance. My willingness to run was based on a desire to engage the many Region 3 volunteers and members to move IEEE further into this new model of member.

I have chosen to use a blog rather than a traditional web site for my campaign in keeping with this model of engagement rather than broadcast and I invite your participation and hope that you will consider supporting me both in my candidacy and the larger mission.
